Nestled on the picturesque Bintan Island in Indonesia, the Doulos Phos is not just any hotel. It is a floating piece of history, an embodiment of maritime heritage, and an unparalleled hospitality experience. As the world’s oldest active passenger ship, the Doulos Phos invites guests to step aboard and embark on a unique journey that blends the charm of the past with modern luxury.
The story of Doulos Phos begins in 1914, when it was launched as the SS Medina. Built in Newport News, Virginia, USA, the ship initially served as a cargo vessel. During World War II, she was conscripted and played a crucial role supporting the war effort. In 1948, the ship changed hands and was renamed SS Roma. 1953 saw her again sold and becoming a cruise liner named Franca C.
In 1977, she became the MV Doulos, a name that translates to “servant” in Greek. This marked a significant transformation as it was acquired by Operation Mobilization (OM), a Christian organization. The MV Doulos sailed across the globe as a floating library and bookstore, bringing knowledge, hope, and aid to countless communities. For over three decades, she traveled to over 100 countries, welcoming millions of visitors on board, and as MV Doulos circumnavigated the equivalent of more than sixteen times round the world.
By 2009, the MV Doulos was retired from her missionary work due to maritime regulations and the need for extensive repairs. However, her journey did not end there. In 2010, the ship was acquired by Mr. Eric Saw, a Singaporean entrepreneur with a vision to preserve this historical vessel and give her a new lease on life.
After meticulous restoration and refurbishment, the Doulos Phos was transformed into a luxury ship hotel, docked at the Bintan Resorts. Soft-launched in Easter of 2019, the Doulos Phos now stands as a symbol of maritime heritage and hospitality, offering guests a unique and immersive experience.
Doulos Phos The Ship Hotel combines the elegance of a bygone era with the comforts of modern amenities. Each of her ninety-three guest cabins is designed to reflect the ship’s rich history while providing contemporary luxury.
