Description
The third Indonesian edition of the world-acclaimed IRONMAN series took place on August 20, 2017 — which saw 16 elite athletes and 1,200 amateur athletes, both local and international, on the start line.
One of the fastest-growing events since its debut in Indonesia in 2015, the racecourse took athletes on an epic journey around Bintan Island, including a run course redesigned by event organizer Metasport to cater better to the athletes.
The race began at dawn with a 1.9KM ocean swim starting from Plaza Lagoi, the centerpiece of the Lagoi Bay tourism development in Bintan Resorts. The athletes then embarked on a scenic one-lap 90km bike course on smooth, open roads. It was then finished off with a faster and more scenic 21km 2-lap run course.
Indofood made its return for the second time, this time stepping up as the event title sponsor. As a total food solution company selling various food and beverage products, Indofood supports sports as a means to promote health and fitness. Besides Ironman 70.3 Bintan the company sponsors football, running, and badminton among other sports in Indonesia.
Over 300 Indonesian kids also took part in the action over the weekend for the 1.5km Ironkids fun run. One of Asia’s oldest triathletes regularly seen at races, 80-year-old Yee Sze Mun from Malaysia, also tackled the challenge.
Both spectators and the local crowd were treated to a plethora of festive activities throughout the weekend with live music, food and drinks, gifts, and lucky draws, including an autograph and selfie session with the pros!
