Bintan Resorts

The first thing one would notice when stepping into the café is that Bintan Delicacies feels similar to that of a quaint tea-house, both serene and peaceful – the perfect setting to while away a lazy afternoon with a decent cup of coffee or tea and some kueh lapis. Located within Chill Cove @ Treasure Bay Bintan, Bintan Delicacies is one of the best spots to take a break from all the fun in the sun at Crystal Lagoon. Unwind after a day of activities and enjoy some light local delights before dinner and enjoy the sun set over the lagoon.

Embark on a back-to-nature adventure as you journey through the thick mangroves of Bintan along Sebung River. The dense foliage and interconnected roots of the trees naturally give rise to a thriving community of animals and plants. Witness the agile leaps of macaques and silver leaf monkeys, and colourful kingfishers as you sail across the mangrove jungle on the Mangrove Discovery Tour.

Sebung River is home to hundreds of wildlife and fauna species. The roots of the mangrove forest holds the soil firmly to the water bed, preventing soil erosion and safeguards the coasts of Bintan. Keep an eye out for mangrove snakes curled up on the trees that form a natural canopy above the meandering river. Monitor lizards also form part of the local community. Sebung River is also home to marine life such as fishes, mud skippers, clams and more. Spot the elusive mud lobsters that weave homes through the mounds. Learn to identify the different species of mangroves and how the river provides a livelihood for its local residents.

For another extraordinary experience, sign up for the night tour that departs daily at 7:30pm. Unlike in the day, the mangrove is serene and peaceful; the rippled river glistens under the pale moonlight. As your eyes adjust to the surrounding darkness, you will see the intermittent yet enchanting glow of dancing fireflies – the main highlight of the night tour. Remember to gaze up at the starry skies too, for such abundance is a spectacle you will hardly get to see in urban civilization.

Nestled in the Sebung River are some of the most delectable seafood options. Dine in restaurants on wooden stilts known as kelongs, and relish at freshly caught seafood of the day.

One of the primary highlights of Chill Cove @ Treasure Bay Bintan would go to the first and largest recreational man-made seawater lagoon in all of Southeast Asia – the 6.3-hectare Crystal Lagoon. Visually stunning, Crystal Lagoon is a state-of-the-art recreational lagoon of pristine and filtered seawater designed to accommodate a wide myriad of activities such as kayaking, sailing, swimming and snorkeling. The lagoon is consistently turquoise, which preps perfectly as the absolute backdrop for captivating photograph moments.

The activity options available and possible at Crystal Lagoon are unlimited. Thrust yourself into the sky with the Jetovator, a water sports accessory that redirects water thrust to propel and elevate riders into mid-air. Feel the formidable force of the winds brushing against your cheeks as the powerful aqua jets of the Jetovator propel you above the water surface. Adrenaline junkies will love the cable ski facility, or pit against one another at the obstacles of the Water Sports Park.

For those who may prefer more relaxed means to explore the area, you may choose to cruise the scenic perimeter of the Crystal Lagoon with a Solar Boat Ride, or pedal around at your own pace on a Water Tricycle.

Unlike the open sea where there are risks of underlying currents, the Crystal Lagoon allows for families with younger kids to enjoy fun-filled activities safely. Kids could play in the shallower zones with giant unicorn floats, and build sandcastles in a separated sand pit. For maximum enjoyment, look out for exciting packages on www.treasurebaybintan.com!

Art in Bintan strongly reflects the rich culture and heritage of the island.  A pool of talented artists sits here; the Galleries of Dekranasda Kabupaten Bintan in Kijang and Plaza Lagoi, Lagoi Bay were set up to share many of their creative, fascinating but underrated works.

Native islanders convert easily accessible but “worthless” materials to beautiful creations.  Browse through the gallery and be amazed by intricate ship models made from fish bones and skin. Beautiful ornaments and brooches are also produced using fish scales. Seashells, including Gong Gong shells are used to construct bike models, vases, mirrors and even lamps. Pose under the exquisite cherry blossom tree made from fish scales at the gallery in Kijang!

A technique of wax-resist dying applied to cloth produces the famed Batik fabric which can also be found at the galleries.

Bintan Island

Functioning as a carpark in the day, Akau Potong Lembu sees a stream of hawkers pushing in their food carts in the late afternoon and transforms into an open-air hawker centre at night. It is popular amongst natives of Tanjung Pinang for its cheap and delicious local fare.

Majority of the tenants here are Chinese and hence visitors of the same race can comfortably fall back on their mother tongue or even dialects (Hokkien/Teochew) for communication. This would also mean that many mouth-watering Chinese dishes such as Bak Kut Teh and Char Kway Tiao can be found here. Highly recommended by the locals, the fish soup here is a must-try!
Muslim travellers can also find a row of local malay food stalls here, serving perfectly grilled satay, and other authentic local dishes.

Also, try the famous Ice Chendol, a classic dessert for the perfect antidote to the warm summer nights of Bintan and end off the day on a sweet note.

Witness the power of Mother Nature at the Banyan Tree Temple of Senggarang Village where ancient trees entwine their roots around, enveloping the ancient walls of the building in protective embrace. The result is a fascinating and formidable structure that makes an ideal photography subject.

There are many stories concerning the origins of the site which was built in 1811. Its signboard reads “大夫第”, referring to residences of high-ranking government government officers called “Kapitan”. Some believe it was the home of deified Kapitan Cina Tan Nguang Ga (陈源教) who was the village head and a good Samaritan that helped the needy during his retirement.

According to the villagers, it was once a grand, two-storey structure. After the house was desolated,  it dilapidated and would have long collapsed if not for the banyan trees’ support.

Surrounded by the remnants of the old walls, the altar sits in the newer concrete area built with funds donated from a Medan Chinese businessman who allegedly struck lucky after praying at the temple. The site now serves as a village shrine with the main deity being the Kapitan whose ancestral tablet is positioned in the centre. Flanking the sides are two unnamed community tablets for locals who have passed away without descendants, and for individuals who have contributed greatly to Senggarang Village.

During the seventh lunar month, descendents of the Kapitan still visit this ancestral home while other frequent visitors include those attracted by its divine efficacy.

Located in Central Bintan, near the foot of Gunung Bintan lies a small family owned eatery that serves a delightful local delicacy – Ayam Presto, fried chicken with a unique twist.

Enjoy a simple lunch at Bude Nino Ayam Presto and try out their signature Ayam Presto! Ayam Presto is fried chicken marinated and cooked with a special blend of ingredients (it can only be revealed that there’s ginger, turmeric and some other spices) over long hours, and then deep fried till crispy and golden. The long cooking time makes the chicken extremely tender, and bones are soft enough to eat! Here, you can literally finish your ENTIRE meal off the plate.

This unique soft bone chicken has delighted the taste buds of travellers from all over the world with its crispy skin and tender juicy meat. The next highlight of the meal is definitely the sambal chilli! It packs a powerful punch with a pleasant mild fragrance while complimenting the chicken. Aside from the fried chicken, the menu offers an assortment of other dishes as well, such as omelette and stir-fried kangkong.

Newly constructed, Gedung Gonggong serves as a Tourism Infomation Centre and is the icon of Tanjung Pinang. This unique building façade is designed to resemble the shell of the Gonggong. A sea snail found in waters surrounding Bintan, Gonggong is a popular local delicacy enjoyed with flavourful sauces after it is boiled or steamed.

The Gonggong building sits majestically at Laman Boenda (Mother’s Promenade), an open community space that offers beautiful sea views; watch as the sun disappears below the horizon with Pulau Penyengat in the foreground. This is a great relaxation spot with a children’s playground and manicured green spaces. Upcoming developments of the town including a floating mosque can be spotted from here. The cluster of facilities, magnificent buildings and beautiful landscapes draws both locals and tourists alike.

Approximately 20 minutes away from the pearly sands of Trikora Coast, lies a serene pilgrimage spot known as the Grotto Santa Maria. From the entrance, the trail starts with the ’14 Stations of the Cross’, depicting the story of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion in limestone statues, leads up to a beautifully preserved statue of Virgin Mary in a cave, beside a quaint little chapel. The chapel comes to life on Sundays as devotees gather with song and prayer during mass sessions.

The tranquil grounds is a reminder of Bintan’s past as a migrant settlement with the existence of a small Catholic community in Trikora dating back to the 1960’s. A steady flow of people were transiting through the area to work in the construction industry or palm oil plantations in Malaysia. They prayed for protection in a temporary chapel under a wooden shed along Trikora Beach Point 3 before embarking on the dangerous sea journey to Southern Johor.

The place of worship moved to its permanent home in the Telok Dalam hillside in the 1970’s. A charismatic French priest, Father Henri Jourdain, also known as Père Henri, moved to Bintan in 1977 and contributed his long term vision to the site. Known to the locals as Pastor Henri, he led the Tanjung Pinang parish which also included devotees from surrounding islands.

Keeping to the Indonesian tradition of seeking enlightenment in mountain caves, Père Henri found a large statue of the Virgin Mary in Java that was installed in a small pagoda-like pavilion and blessed by Bishop Hilarius. The installation of the statue fortified the Telok Dalam site as a place of pilgrimage and meditation for both, locals and tourists visiting the popular coast of Trikora.

The Virgin Mary statue displayed weighs around 250 kg. A larger grotto was built by Vietnamese refugees with donations from the Tanjung Pinang community and inaugurated in 2001. The construction of the elegant chapel and the 14 Stations of the Cross was sponsored by the Catholic community of Singapore and inaugurated in 2010.

Grotto Santa Maria is part of the Trail of Sea Gypsies Tour.
