Tanjung Pinang Traditional Market

After exploring the Tanjung Pinang Wet Markets, continue down the busy lanes of Jalan Pasar Ikan (Fish Market Street) and Jalan Plantar II (2nd Platform Street). Take heed of the locals on trishaws transporting cargo from the nearby jetty; this is where most of the commerce and trading action of Tanjung Pinang takes place.

There may not be lavish shopping malls lined up but shopping is best when haggling is allowed. Get your Indonesian Rupiah ready! The rows of shophouses on these streets offer a diverse range of products including dried seafood and other foodstuff, electronic goods, antique ceramics, colourful apparel, handicrafts and souvenirs. This is the best place to purchase some Keropok Gonggong (sea snail crackers) or dried delicacies from the sea such as fish maw and anchovies which are relatively cheaper here. Check out the various knick knacks sold by street peddlers; you may discover a long-lost treasure.

This area makes a good stop before boarding the pompong (water taxi) ride to Pulau Penyengat as the pier is located just a few steps away.
